My Project

My students are linguistically brilliant. The vast majority are bilingual, some multi-lingual. Within one classroom, they speak 20+ different languages, from Spanish to Tagalog to Mandarin. Many of them are immigrants themselves or have parents who are immigrants.

A third of my students are still English Language Learners, from various regions of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and a large majority of my non-Chinese speakers are also multilingual.

Of my English-proficient students, many speak at least one language other than English outside of the classroom, and they read, write, speak, listen, and think in different languages interchangeably throughout the day.

They are also all supportive and inspiring teachers themselves, despite their young ages. Because of their teaching, I can tell you who I am, my profession, and things like "focus on your work" or "I am super stressed out!", in 5 languages (I can also tell you that "I like cats", but perhaps that's less important).

I want to teach the novel, Brown Girl in the Ring, by Nalo Hopkinson. Our New York City Department of Education's supply system does not carry the book, nor does it carry many books at all from Caribbean or African writers. Due to deficient offerings, it is very difficult to provide our students with an inclusive curriculum, which is ironic, considering New York's public system is one of the most linguistically, ethnically, and racially diverse school systems in the country. Many of my students identify as Afro-Caribbean, and this will be the first book in our book room written by an author, and about a protagonist, of similar identity.
