My Students

My students are full of creative energy. They love coming to music class twice a week to sing, play instruments, and dance. Many of them perform at least once a year for our school community and families.

Our school's Orff-Schulwerk and World Music Drumming based curricula are known for their highly creative, hands-on approaches to music education.

All students are involved in speaking, singing, creating, improvising, moving, and playing instruments.

Orff-Schulwerk and World Music Drumming develop musical skills through imitation, experimentation and personal expression. My students begin with what they naturally do best: play! My student-centered classroom builds musical skills and knowledge through playing with concepts and discovering music through speech, songs, and drama. During the time they spend in my classroom, they become confident and competent musicians and composers and knowledgeable.

My Project

I have attended World Music Drumming workshops for five summers. I have used every single lesson and activity I've learned from these workshops with my students with great success. I would like to take the World Music Drumming Level 3 in Milwaukee, WI, in June 2020, to further my knowledge and skills in African drumming.

My third through fifth grade students absolutely love playing authentic African drumming pieces.

However, it can be difficult to learn this kind of music because it is usually taught aurally; this means you have to study in person with a master drummer. Living in Nebraska limits my opportunities for this kind of study and makes the opportunities I do have expensive. My hope is that this project can take some of the personal financial burdens​ off of my shoulders so that I can continue learning this music and pass down what I learn to my wonderful students.
