My Students

How many of us have wished we could step back into time? Have wished we could witness history? Ancient Egypt? Kitty Hawk? Gettysburg with Lincoln? Historical fiction is a virtual museum that blends everyday details with the complexity of issues and competing opinions.

My students, sixth graders in a Maine middle school, are from ten different sending schools and situations, with a wide range of ability levels, speaking seven languages, and enjoying multi-faceted interests.

Thirty percent of my students are immigrants and this year the boy/girl ratio is 35/65. As I've planned this literature circle on historical fiction, I've kept in mind that one wonderful aspect of sixth grade is that while they retain childhood innocence, they are beginning to move outside their experience and can analyze and synthesize what they see and hear. Because of our demographic snapshot, the diverse experiences in our classroom will enrich the conversations as we study the genre and also develop increased awareness.

My Project

The two books that I'm requesting are outstanding, illuminating, examples of powerful historical fiction. The Land, is the prequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor who was awarded the Newberry Medal for this book. The Land is a lower Lexile and more accessible for my 6th grade students, but it is no less a powerful story of the beginnings of the Logan family and their endured sacrifices to own land. Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, won the Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction, was a National Book Award finalist and is a revelatory story about a young slave girl living in NYC in the spring of 1776. As she struggles to throw off the chains of slavery, the young colonies set out to throw off the chains that bind them to England. An important benefit of pairing these two titles is that young people see both genders engaged in personal and global conflicts In conclusion, I hope donors support this project which addresses universal themes and poses questions.

In the middle school canon that includes Johnny Tremain, My Brother Sam is Dead, and Out of the Dust, too often the experiences and contributions of African Americans in United States history aren't readily available.

This grant request seeks to offer my students an immersion in historical fiction dedicated to the African American experience. I'm convinced that gaining insight into issues in history will aid students in analyzing the conflicts of today. Thank you for your time and support!
