My Project

I chose this collection of multiracial posters and artists to provide visual affirmation for all of my students on every wall in our classroom. These posters, portraits and photo books reflect the extremely diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds of my students, who are from predominantly low-income families. My classroom includes students who are of African American, Latinx, Asian, and Middle Eastern descent, and who represent home countries as diverse as Mexico, Columbia, Indonesia, France, Yemen and Afghanistan.

The representations students see of people who look like them provide mirrors in which to see themselves and pathways to imagine who and how they can become; however, far too many students do not see themselves reflected at all.

Through research and learning conducted at a University of Pennsylvania seminar on Black Visual Culture, I developed a unit of study on portraiture and self-portraiture which includes surrounding my students with affirming images of people who look like them, avoiding stereotypes and subverting the white gaze. I have curated this collection so my children can see themselves reflected in our classroom everywhere and every day, and they can imagine endless possibilities for who and how they can be.
