This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to work in this beautiful community of Jackson Heights, Queens. We have a diverse population of students with equally diverse needs. We teach a large immigrant population with families from Central and South America as well as Asia. Almost 20% of our school is made up of English Language Learners. We are a Barrier Free School, which means that we provide access to children with disabilities, including students with severe cognitive, medical and emotional needs. We are a Title I school in need of financial assistance due to our high numbers of children from low-income families.

My Project

Close your eyes and imagine your younger self. You are about 4 or 5 years old. You still believe in the magic of the Tooth Fairy and you love to move and play. You use your imagination and creativity to learn about yourself, your classmates and the world around you. Your teacher arrives with a basket filled with puppets, pom poms, books and a Hoberman sphere! All of these materials will allow you to go on many yoga adventures together-right there in your classroom!

Puppets can encourage us to explore and hold yoga poses, while we get stronger in mind, body and heart.

We know that students are in need of practices that help them to connect, breathe, move, focus and relax. Bringing the practices of yoga and mindfulness to PreK students is a fun and challenging task. With an assortment of high quality puppets, we will be able to incorporate interactive storytelling strategies into a series of yoga poses to support students in feeling strong, confident, compassionate and happy. We can go into the depths of the jungle with elephants, giraffes and monkeys. Perhaps we can take a trip on a boat and find ourselves way out in the ocean with whales, dolphins and sharks!

Books and games will help us to develop these skills as well. We can play “Toega” with pom poms and share breathing exercises with a giant Hoberman sphere. We can read books and explore poses as we learn how to stand up for ourselves and for others. Don’t you wish that you could go back in time and be your 4 or 5 year old self so that you can join us on one of our classroom yoga and mindfulness adventures?
