My Students

My students come from low-income and working class families and are part of a long tradition of hard work and learning. Most of them have part time jobs after school, and what little they have, has not come easy to them.

Our school is the oldest and most crowded high school in the city.

Many of my students' parents and grandparents attended this very same school. Even with hardships, they have kind generous hearts. Most of them really need support, so I give them all I've got. They are willing to work hard for me in spite of my corny science jokes because they know that I believe in them!

My Project

My biology students have begun setting up a planted aquarium, but they need a few more basic tools to really be able to maintain it and run with it. A planted aquarium has live plants with soil under the gravel substrate, and a few animals such as invertebrates or fish. If they do it correctly, the tank will last for several years, and they will be able to use the plants in several activities throughout the biology curriculum.

Having a live ecosystem in our classroom will give my students real world experience of ecology and environmental science on a micro level.

My students will have to use their STEM skills to monitor various ecological cycles just as an environmental scientist would do on a larger scale. They will use the CO2 drop checker to monitor the carbon dioxide levels in the water to make sure there is enough for the plants. The water test kit will help them test pH, nitrates, and phosphates. They'll use the aquascape tools to harvest the plants for several class activities throughout the year for things such as observing cell structure and cyclosis (cytoplasmic streaming) under the microscope.

We also have a photosynthesis lab experiment where students directly measure the oxygen output from aquatic plants under different lighting conditions, and experimentally determine which wavelengths of light have the greatest effect of photosynthesis.
