Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As students have returned to in-person classroom learning, some have struggled with interpersonal skills and social-emotional learning. In today’s world, many young people suffer from loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Through playing Dungeons & Dragons together, my students will develop a sense of belonging and trust, as well as deepen their creativity and bring some excitement and joy into the school day. Additionally, they’ll build cooperative problem-solving skills as they create solutions to the situations they face in the storytelling game. Roleplaying games empower students to connect with a community around a shared experience in a safe and supervised environment.

”Participation in narrative role play [like Dungeons & Dragons] can open up interests in topics such as mathematics, science, history, culture, ethics, critical reading, and media production," said Professor David Simkins of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

D&D players perform complex mathematical analyses as they anticipate outcomes and predict risks. The rule books are full of numerical charts that players must study in order to predict how things will play out in the story.
