My Students

My students are aged 9 to 11. They are classified as special education students with an IEP. They have been classified with emotional disturbance and learning disabilities.

They come to our school with many special challenges and problems but are hardworking and the improvement we see over the years is truly amazing.

Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a wide range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. My project which will utilize iPads to improve literacy, reading, and writing, an area where our students perform significantly below their general education peers.

My Project

This project will give 12 special education children access to reading books, creating their own book reports utilizing the programs Pages and Keynote and the chance to publish their own books utilizing Ibook. In addition students will utilize the iPads to utilize the online portions of our schools reading Program

Children develop as readers and writers by interacting with many factors in their  environment. Children become literate  in multiple ways through their experiences, and with their families and larger environment. Children’s experiences at home, in their community, and in early childhood classrooms form their knowledge about reading, writing, and other literate behaviors.

These experiences with print, the pathways to literacy,  are known as multiple literacies The multiple literacies of children in the 21st century is influenced by the increasing importance of digital technology and young children’s increasing immersion in interactive media is necessary to foster and strengthen literacy in young learners. Consequently, to ensure children’s literacy development completely, the definition of reading and writing must be broadened to include multimedia and computer-based print.

In order for children to emerge as fully literate the definition of reading and writing must include multi-media and computer-based print. My students suffer literacy deficits from myriad of conditions including learning disabilities, unstable home life  and  trauma that has caused behavioral incidences that  past has led to significant time away from academic classrooms. Children who are delayed readers find reading on the screen engaging and reluctant writers find the experience of writing on an iPad less intimidating and move motivating than a blank page. The addition of iPads will allow our students to read books, write using several programs, and do further research about what they are learning about. The motivation of iPads in the classroom as a tool of literacy will encourage reading, writing and researching.
