My Students

My students are deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deaf-blind. They have hearing loss ranging from mild to profound. My campus serves as the high school level Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in our area.

My students are bused in from surrounding school districts to receive specialized services such as deaf education teachers, an audiologist, speech pathologist, teacher of the visually impaired, and sign language interpreters.

Most of our students come from low-income households and many have limited access to language (spoken English or sign language) at home. It is imperative for our students to learn new skills in hands-on, visual ways!

My Project

This year, our Deaf Education department held its 1st Annual Adulting Day! What is Adulting Day? It's a day devoted to learning a bunch of skills that you wish you had known or learned in high school that will be helpful for life. We had it set up like the students were "attending a conference". They were given a program with stations to attend at specific times with their assigned group.

The various Adulting Day stations included presentations from police, banking, cooking, laundry care, basic automotive care, paying bills, and child care.

We had a presentation from a police officer from school district police department about what to do if a Deaf/Hard of Hearing person gets pulled over by the police, what to do in emergency situations, how to get help, etc.

They attended a presentation from a credit union about banking and the differences between credit and debit cards. For lunch, our students whipped up a 3 course meal in the Special Education wing kitchen to share.

They learned how to sew a button and use the washer and dryer properly. Our automotive teachers taught them how to change a tire and check the oil in a car.

Lastly, they had to play "Minute to Win It" style games to earn (fake) money on their (real looking) debit cards. If they won a game they earned the higher amount and if you lost then you earned a lower amount. The money "earned" was used to pay bills and child care.

I am requesting items related to each of these stations to go into a swag bag (like they would receive at an actual conference). I'm asking for measuring cups (cooking), tire gauges (automotive), steamers (laundry), and wallets (banking), toiletry bags (personal care), and heat vinyl for the swag bags.
