This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have big hearts, but we need art supplies! Please help get our “Adopt a Senior: Art Gallery of Love” project off the ground!

I work with an amazing group of second grade students who are curious, hard working and full of energy!

Located in an urban setting, our school is sandwiched between loads and loads of apartment buildings. Many of our students arrive from South American countries with very limited English skills. Their parents are super supportive and will do anything to meet the needs of their children. Many of the parents are struggling to make ends meet and with school budget cuts constantly looming overhead, we have no place to turn for these special art supplies. We have very little “greenery” in our environment, and that’s why I want to focus on an art project that will help the students create nature inspired collages that they will share with the senior center in our neighborhood.

My Project

The students have decided to adopt a senior as a way of reaching out to our community. By just spending some time with them, creating something beautiful together, we could make a difference! After studying the illustrations in, The Tiny Seed, the students will try out a little collage of their own- with the help of the seniors! We will take a walking trip to the senior center to work on the project. Students will take turns reading the book to the seniors. We’ll break up into groups and ask the seniors to mark up the construction paper with the cray-pas. We’ll spend some time painting watercolor designs over the markings. We’ll tear up the papers to make shapes in designs inspired by nature. Framing each piece of artwork created by the seniors in collaboration with the students will create a small art gallery for their walls, in order to remind them that they are appreciated. The students will strengthen their reading skills, work cooperatively, share materials, and give back!
