My Students

"Number rules the universe" Pythagoras once said and Math rules my classroom as my students love when it is math time! They love being able to work together in partnerships, solving equations and comparing results. They thrive on the freedom math periods provide them.

My students are awesome!

They are so well behaved, responsible and eager to learn. They always complete their homework and are very eager to please me. I could not have asked for a better group of students! Since they are so amazing, I try my best in providing them with a classroom rich with resources, technology and of course manipulatives. Our school is huge! Over 1400 students, so you can imagine the kind of budgeting my Principal has to do. Every dollar is spent and accounted for ever so carefully. The bottom line is that my students really need more math manipulatives. We have barely enough! My class is quite large so often partnerships need to team up to share the tools. Educational supplies are so expensive and if I could I would purchase the manipulatives myself but unfortunately I can not. Three hundred dollars is also too much to ask my Principal for. So what can I do? I'm turning to the wonderful people of the world to help me out.

My Project

Manipulatives are crucial in understanding math concepts. It allows students to be tactile and visualize concepts. Plus they are really fun! Manipulatives assists with my lessons. They provide a tremendous amount of excitement to math periods when the children see me reaching for a Ziploc baggie of colored counters or the very popular unifix cube. Even in free time or class parties, the kids want to build and create with the cubes! But how can I teach a lesson with only base 1000 cubes and no base ten or one blocks? How can the students multiply with a limited amount of counters? How can we learn our money facts or relate numbers and operations when we only have Nickles? A new set of math manipulatives will allow me to create centers! New math centers with allow for the collaboration and articulation of imperative math skills and encourage accountable talk. Centers allow for peer tutoring and assist those who may need a little extra push to grasp a concept. Plus they are fun!

If I could do it without donor support, I would.

I love these kids so much. My school is amazing and everyone is so supportive but when it involves money, my Principal does her best to ensure that each class has the essential tools for conducive learning. To allot $300 to my class and not to the others is unfair. Unfortunately we make do with what we have. However, through sites like Donor's Choose and great donors, any classroom in America can have the tools they need for success. Please help.
