Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are very focused on the clinical side of the health field. They want to become nurses and doctors. But I also want to open their options and have them think about other possible professions such as a medical researcher, coding specialist, or bioengineer. As a way to introduce the idea of coding in a non-threatening way I want to bring in mini robots. The coding required to get the robots to do simple tasks can be used to foster the type of thinking needed in the professions. I hope to slowly build up my students' confidence in coding and apply it to altering simple research projects. But the start would be coding the robots.

I also hope that the robots can be used for review games to add a competitive element to my typical review days.

Students will be able to get the robot to perform a task after they correctly answer review questions. I hope that this adds a bit more engagement to the typical review. It also helps to foster a sense of belonging to the classroom as we play together and destress with some games.

My students are super focused and interested in the health field. They work hard every day to meet expectations and strive for success. They demonstrate medical knowledge and skills. However, they are still kids and need to let loose a little.

By engaging in games students have the opportunity to challenge themselves, relate to peers and experiment with new ideas.

Play is still an important part of mental health. The games, puzzles and equipment requested will be used to help address the social emotional side of my students. They are under tremendous pressure to perform and I want them to still enjoy the learning process.
