My Students

Fifth graders are naturally creative. What better way to tap into that creativity than through art? I would like to include more art projects to compliment the subjects of reading, writing, and math.

My class of curious fifth graders is packed with motivated learners who want to know more about the world around them.

We are a Title I school in a highly urban area of California where parents work long hours to make ends meet. The students come to school every day ready to learn and appreciate the resources we are able to provide, but those resources that the school can supply are fewer and fewer each year as the budget shrinks. Families are stepping up to fill in where needed but it is a struggle for them, too. Few students are able to purchase the supplies that the school once provided.

My Project

Students who are engaged in their learning make more progress. One way to engage them is to integrate the arts into the core curriculum. This has become more and more difficult as the school has had to cut back on the basic supplies it stocks, such as crayons, colored pencils, and scissors. While we ask students to bring these from home, many don't or aren't able to. When I ask students to take out their art supplies, too many of them don't have any, making it impossible to continue with the art project that was planned. I'm requesting basic supplies to keep in the classroom for those students who don't have any to bring from home.

Arts are an essential part of the education of children, but we often don't integrate it enough into the curriculum.

My goal for the next year is to use art as often as possible to reach all students. You can help us reach that goal by providing some of the essential tools we need in the classroom.
