Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are second graders in a New York City Title 1 School. They are a part of a Spanish Dual Language Program. They have been a part of this program since they began kindergarten. The students in the class are culturally diverse. For some families, it is a financial challenge to provide all the school supplies necessary for success. For some students, English is their first language and they are learning Spanish. For others, Spanish is their first language and they are learning English. Regardless of the language, they are learning, the children are enthusiastic and eager to learn and truly become bilingual in both English and Spanish.

My students are wonderful children who are enthusiastic to be learning two languages at such a young age.

They enjoy learning using a variety of tools, strategies, and resources. They rely on classroom charts to help support their independence and become self-directed learners. On a daily basis they are engaged in learning basic reading and writing skills, math skills and hands-on science or social studies exploration, all in both languages.

My Project

I am asking for a color printer because my school currently only has black and white printers. I use pictures in my classroom all the time but can only print in black and white.

As a teacher of English Language Learners, pictures and photographs are essential in my classroom to helping the students access the language in an engaging way.

I always try to support vocabulary learning by showing students a picture to give them that support. Pictures are also great for helping students tell stories orally who are not quite ready to write in English just yet...though I know they will get there soon enough! My classroom is currently filled with black and white pictures. While the pictures allow the students to get the gist of what it is showing, having a color picture brings it to life and makes it more engaging. Color pictures will make classroom charts more visible and visually appealing to students.
