Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a first-year sped teacher currently teaching a 6:1:1 classroom, which consists of 6 autistic students ages 4-7. The items I requested are a mixture of sensory play and learning methods. Our school is located in a low-income family neighborhood in which many of my students come from within. For my students, they are entering my classroom for the very first time as kindergartners or first graders and I believe that my little ones would benefit tremendously as they transition into the school year. These items will also benefit their sensory needs. Sensory play is an extremely important asset in a child's education, especially in the younger ages. Through sensory play, they can learn turn-taking, fine motor skills, emotional development, language development and so much more. As my students struggle with sensory processing issues that lead to feelings of anxiety and difficulty focusing in the classroom. By incorporating sensory toys - such as sensory beads, pads, and foam paint, I aim to create a supportive environment that fosters engagement and helps my students self-regulate. Other items such as a carpet and different floor seatings like floor rocking chair and a bean bag, will provide my students with a variety of seating options that will help them succeed this school year. My overall goal is to create a second home for my students with items they like and enjoy!
