This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
There is a lot to learn in an early childhood classroom: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and self regulation--just to name a few! To help our youngest learners, particularly those with special needs, we must provide adaptive tools to ensure independence and engagement.
Students are more engaged and less disruptive of their peers when they have the tools needed to work independently.
This is why I want to provide my students with special scissors. The grasping motion needed for cutting is critical to other developmental skills. With these adaptive scissors, our students can practice cutting independently and safely. Special seating gives kiddos a scaffold for controlling their bodies during carpet time. Finally, our youngest students are just learning to walk in line. Though a straight line isn't necessary, staying together is a matter of safety. This toddler walking rope will keep kiddos going in the same direction. It has the added benefit of offering practice learning colors and shapes.
The need for verbal redirection is diminished when students have physical parameters for sitting and travelling. This support also creates a more pleasant experience for children and helps them feel independent.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
