My Students

My students love moving! We work with our physical therapist on exercises, dances, and gross motor activities inside of our classroom so we can practice our literacy and communication skills at the same time.

We are a classroom of 9 students with developmental disabilities and autism.

We are a specialized school within the NYC Dept. of Education and are located in Queens. Our therapy room is isolated in the back of the gymnasium so students who are pulled out of the classroom for therapy are missing classroom instruction. Our class has opted to do a joint action routine with our physical therapist so we can combine therapy with learning. It keeps me happy because the students are learning. The physical therapist is happy because the kids are moving. The students are happy because they are having fun! Win-Win-Win!

My Project

The body sock (cooperative blanket) helps students with spatial awareness of their bodies. The balance beam promotes balance. The bean bags give a safe throwing/tossing object to use inside the room. Each time we run our joint action routine, one of the students picks a large-group activity for the class. This equipment will allow students to have more choices of activities to promote development of gross motor skills in a fun way.

My students look forward to our exercise/physical therapy each day.

By having more equipment for our room, students will have more opportunities for choice-making and communication with their classmates as we learn and exercise.
