My Students

"I never could have achieved the success that I have without setting physical activity and health goals." - Bonnie Blair This quote is related to my project because I want my students to achieve success in both staying healthy, but also by staying active.

The school I work for is a special needs school; all students have some kind of physical or educational disability.

Our school has over three hundred students in seven different locations. The location I work at is housed in a general education high school which has over three thousand students. With that many students in one school, I do not have access to the gymnasium or any open space for my students. I have thirty-one students that I teach adapted physical education to, and it's all done in the classroom. Before we start, desks and chairs need to be moved and safety is an issue. However, the students love to participate in A.P.E. and will do anything to help the staff and I make an appropriate space for their activities.

My Project

This is my first year teaching A.P.E. For the past five years the A.P.E. teacher would just have the students walk the track or watch old exercise videos in the classroom. That's not my style. I want these students to experience the most out of the high school physical education class as they can. The equipment I am requesting Pickleball, disc golf and giant foam rings that will help these students get that opportunity by teaching them that physical activity is just more than walking or exercise.

With my students disabilities, they don't have the chance to experience what many other peers get to experience.

Getting this equipment is a start for them to get that chance. I feel this start will give them the confidence to go out and not let their disabilities hinder their experience in physical education class.
