My Students

My students are from a poor, rural area in a poor, rural state. Many of my students come from homes where their basic needs are not being met. However poor and dire some of their lives may be, my students are rich in their compassion for and interest in the peoples of the world.

Though these students do not have the latest and greatest gadgets and the best clothes, they have spirit and spunk.

They are genuinely angered and outraged when they learn that there are places in our world where children go without food and where parents are forced to give up their children. My students may not have all that they see on TV, but they love their families and want to make the world a better place. Simply put, they have hope and passion. I would love to capitalize on this interest in global affairs so they can enter their voices into the fight for basic human rights.

My Project

I am requesting the purchase of two sets of books to read with my sophomore English students. We are supposed to study World Lit, but are stuck reading Shakespeare. Not that Shakespeare's not great, but there's more to World Lit than the Bard. We just finished reading Elie Wiesel's Holocaust memoir Night. My students were taken aback by the cruelty and horror of the Holocaust. They want to learn more about what's going on in the world today, and I'd like to show them through these two book sets. Trash is about children growing up in a dump site in South American country, and Bamboo People is about a Burmese boy soldier. The other three requested books are to support and expand the learning in my classroom.

Most of my students will spend their lives in the mountains of rural Maine.

They may not leave in person, but they love to learn about the world through the books that we read in class. They are just finding their voices and are passionate about raising awareness about what's going on in the world. Though we cannot go to these countries and help in person, we are interested in involving our local community in learning more about the struggle for human rights. Please help us continue this course!
