This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is centrally located in the Metrotech Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn - an ideal place for the three schools on our campus, all focusing on some aspect of STEM: engineering, technology, and inquiry in math and science. Our students are naturally curious about the world around them - and need a place where they can dig into these questions. The students love the library and we want the library to be a central hub for both academic and personal growth at our campus. Our school recently renovated the library after 5+ years without a librarian. We are busy working to update the print and non-print resources in our collection to serve the needs of our 21st-century learners.
Giving these students the resources they need and deserve sends a message: we value you and we value your education.
My students work hard and want to be here. There are over 1,400 of these passionate and curious learners in grades 6 through 12 in our urban school, and they now have a space of their own to exercise those skills. I can't wait to help them grow into enthusiastic readers, ethical users of information, skillful researchers, and critical thinkers.
My Project
The seventh grade team is preparing for their next unit in social and reform movements! During this unit, students will research and study great speeches by famous activists, politicians, and public figure in their own "People's History" project (adapted from historian Howard Zinn's Education Project). The unit will culminate in a day of presentations where students will create posters and perform a speech (or excerpt) by someone they have researched. Following the "People's History" unit, seventh graders will participate in a student-led activist project in their own community which will take place on or around June 19, Juneteenth!
Our students need informational books to help them research social and reform movements, including individuals, politicians, and public figures.
All books will be cataloged and become part of our school library's circulating collection and available to all students in our building.
