My Students

Students sit at tables and desks all day. Research shows that if a person sits for longer than 15 minutes at a time, their brain thinks they are getting ready to go to sleep. The results--nodding off, wandering attention, and a sharp drop-off in learning. I want my students to be alert and active.

My students are typical American teenagers.

They don't always get enough exercise. They don't always eat a healthy diet. They don't always get enough sleep. But by taking my Nutrition and Wellness class, students are showing that they have at least some interest in improving their health. And I want to encourage all my students to be more proactive in decisions that affect their health. I also have students who are trying to cope with ADHD, which makes it harder for them to concentrate in a traditional classroom setting.

My Project

I would love for all my students, but especially those with ADHD or other problems that affect their concentration and attention span, to have an alternative to sitting still at a table or desk. With the an exercise bike workstation, a student who finds it difficult to sit still or who needs the change from just sitting at table will have something else to do. The student will still be doing classwork, still be listening to what is going on in the classroom, still be reading or writing, but will also have an outlet for excess energy and something to do with his or her feet! I envision this exercise bike workstation having a spot in an unobtrusive corner of my classroom where a student can sit and pedal while working or while I lecture. In an ideal world, each student would have one of these, but one will be a nice start!

I am a firm believer that anything that can be done to encourage and increase students' physical activity will be a benefit to them.

Students who are physical active are more alert, have better attention spans, and perform better in the classroom. I have a recumbent exercise bicycle and a manual treadmill in my classroom now and they are great ways to encourage activity, but can not be used during regular class time. This product can be used while a student works!
