Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an intervention teacher, I need my students to be engaged! My room is structured, my lessons follow routines, but the activities are high-interest and engaging to ensure their learning needs are being met while they are with me.

Our school is a Title I school located in an area that is deeply impacted by a low socio-economic status.

The neighborhood my students live in exposes them to issues such as drugs, gangs, violence, crime, as well as hunger and poverty, on a daily basis. The students that come through my classroom are reading below grade level and need intensive intervention. Because of the hardships they face in their daily lives, sometimes helping them see how important it is to be able to read proficiently is difficult. I am constantly looking for new texts that will engage them, and draw them into the lesson, without it having to be a power struggle.

My Project

This donation will allow me to devise a unit of reading intervention using a high interest text that students will be able to relate to. Many of the social issues that are present within the pages of this novel, are present within my students' daily lives. The students will practice various reading strategies, as well as complete activities on sentence structure, and the mechanics of English, but most importantly students will use A Child Called It to focus on their fluency issues. By using a high interest title like A Child Called It, hopefully the students will be engrossed enough in the story that they'll forget that reading is difficult for them, and they'll participate because they will want to know what comes next. This unit of work will also open up opportunities for students to engage in personal writing, which is an excellent avenue of self-expression for students like mine.

Our reading intervention classes lack access to high interest books.

Because of this we most often rely on articles and shorter pieces that can be photocopied and printed. In English class, my students often give up and never get to the end of their assigned book because its too hard for them. By providing them with a high interest book like this one, and giving them the opportunity to read with guided help and instruction, you are giving them an opportunity to grow, learn, and develop.
