Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of teaching some of the most academically marginalized students. Some of these students had been written off, often ignored, and their learning styles and personality was never personally addressed. As someone who didn't have a background in teaching when I first started I was skeptical that I could make an impact on the youth I've been assigned. However, since I've started I realized that when students are met where they're at and one caters to their specific needs, engagements, and wants the students will not only perform better but their level of engagement in the classroom and their efforts go much further.
Students in my room often say they would like a snack, or that they can't focus so when I've purchased snacks, candies, and prizes in the past, the student engagement rate is significantly higher, and the effort they put in goes further.
When these materials are combined with a successful classroom management system and proper incentives, students feel great. This was proven through their performance in Q1 and their final performance in Q4. In being able to provide these supplies to my students, I can ensure that I foster an ideal learning environment for them, and realize that they do indeed have someone in their corner rooting for them.
