My Students

Today's children are spending more and more of their free time with video game controls and television remotes, rather than playing outside. What I've noticed about my students is that they have really strong thumbs! I want to give them the chance to develop strong bodies as well.

I teach transitional kindergarten at a multi-cultural, public school.

Our TK class includes both English and non-English speakers, as well as students with disabilities. Our community is going through a rough patch economically. Recently we were notified that the number of our families living below the poverty level has increased significantly. For many of my students, the only time they will spend exercising is during the school day. However, as the emphasis at schools becomes more academic, funds for physical education and recess equipment are becoming more and more limited. My school district has given me a Physical Education guide with many activities designed for my 5 year olds. However, I do not have the necessary equipment for many of the activities in the guide. Please help me provide equipment that my students can use for movement, play and exercise.

My Project

I am asking for a variety of play equipment for our students to use at their recess and PE time. To develop eye/hand coordination, I requested catch pads with soft, safe balls and a ring toss game. Foam pogo sticks and jump ropes will provide fun aerobic exercise. A tricycle will strengthen leg muscles. Also included in this request is a toy barn and a monkey stacking game. We already have a designated cart for storing the requested equipment. Popular recess toys get lots of use and need to be replaced from time to time. Our students will get lots of active play from these items. While playing and strengthening their physical bodies, they will also be learning to share, take turns, and play together as a team.

By funding this proposal, you will be providing wonderful equipment that will help my Transitional Kindergarteners become physically fit!
