Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 1st Grade Class is made up of 30 students. Half of those students are ENL (English as a New Language) students. The rest of the children are regular education students. My class is part of a program that is new to our school. The idea is that ENL students will learn the language from language immersion, as well as a co-teaching setting for the Reading/Writing portion of the day.

Students are often teachers in each other's lives.

The ENL students are learning English and American customs from their new friends, and the native English speakers are learning about world cultures and tolerance from their non-native friends.

My Project

My students need more activities to keep them actively engaged while they are learning. We have "center time" for math, reading, and writing. My students thrive at center time. They are happy, excited, engaged, and learning. They need to touch, feel, and work while "playing" in order to learn academically and grow socially. These items will help them do that.

Students learn by doing!

My students, especially the ENL students, will practice writing skills, will practice speaking skills, will increase their vocabulary, and will increase their number sense just by participating in these games that will be utilized at "center time". ENL students will be paired with Native English speaking students in the games so that they can work together to learn. The Native speakers will increase their vocabulary (working with synonyms) while the ENL students will be using the same game to put pictures with the vocabulary words, thus increasing their English language skills. With the storytelling activity, the paired students will work together to create a story, using picture cards to help the ENL students learn visually and using oral speaking to help the Native speakers practice sequencing concepts. The same paired learning experience will also work with the math games. Natice speakers will be able to learn number words, while ENL students will be able to put the counting concept with the numeral to understand and practice the math aspect of language. My students will grow with these games, both academically and socially, as they work together and learn from one another.
