Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
With 70% Hispanic and 40% active English Learners, our Title I school's needs run deep. Our students share much learning and joy with our community each day as they learn not only their class content, but how to successfully navigate the complex world of middle school emotions. In a trauma-informed approach that underscores wellness and socio-emotional learning, we are creating a new Calm Room that will serve all students in our building. Students experiencing overwhelming emotions who might need a few minutes' break away from an overstimulating environment will be able to self-refer (or be referred by the classroom teacher) to the Calm Room.
After a few minutes in the adult-supervised space, students will be able to return to the classroom environment, having bypassed disruptive or work-avoidant behavior.
The room will be outfitted with flexible seating and sensory items conducive to achieving calmness while remaining cognitively stimulated. This project seeks contributions towards outfitting the room with two active desks: one a pedal desk, through which students can spend some of that adolescent high energy while reviewing their classwork or reading a book, and a standing/balance desk. For those students whom seating for some eight hours a day is not conducive to academic engagement, these desks will provide a way to stimulate calmness, and provide a constructive way to stay mentally active while also cognitively and kinesthetically engaged.
