This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students have been back to in-person learning for one year, and some are still adjusting. Over the past year, I have noticed that one way to help ease this transition and to help all students in their learning is to allow flexible seating and fidgeting at desks; these tools allow students to stay engaged in the learning and participate in classroom discussions while allowing an outlet for energy. Our class has worked to develop flexible seating options over the past two years, and students took to those with structures in place. While we have grown our flexible seating options, our fidget resources are an area that we would like to still offer choices.

Our new goal is to place new calming strips on all student desks, offer a strip on notebooks for use in their traditional classroom, add to our class fidget bin, and replace our broken chair bands.

These tools will allow students to engage their fingers and bodies at their desks while still actively participating in class discussions and instruction.

Sometimes students just need a different outlet for their energy, and this is where the fidgets and chair bands help. Students can adjust the chair bands to any height or push them to the top of the chair if they become too much of a distraction. The calming strips were introduced last year, and students within multiple grade levels used them throughout the day. Squeezing a stress ball while taking a few “belly breaths” can help center a student and allow them to refocus their mindset so that they can participate in the educational task that the class is focusing on. Last year, students used the “squeeze ball” during lessons, independent work time, and during assessments. More tools in our toolbox means more students can access these resources.
