My Students

I teach in a Title I school where 100% of the students qualify for free meals. Approximately one-third of my students are English Language Learners, some coming from monolingual families. All of my students have the potential to be anything they desire!

My students come from various backgrounds and cultures, but they all have one thing in common.

They all attend a school in which they are encouraged to learn new things and to take on new challenges. It is my goal to provide each of my students a rich educational experience with plenty of outlets for movement to maintain their focus during lessons.

My Project

I have the privilege of teaching a very active group of fourth graders. They don't like to sit in the traditional classroom chairs, and I don't blame them! I don't like them either! They are not ideal for many of the expectations of the traditional classroom. Children need to be able to move as an outlet for their energy, and the usually uncomfortable, sometimes cracked, often incorrectly sized chairs just don't cut it!

Research shows that children need movement in order to activate some of the most critical areas of the brain for learning.

So why are we asking them to sit still? I have many students who simply NEED movement. They will benefit the most from the flexible seating options that would be offered by having these Hokki stools in our classroom.

Your contribution to this project will help my students stay focused. They will be better able to retain new knowledge, and they will have opportunities to choose a healthy alternative to traditional classroom chairs.
