My Project

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs, student’s basic needs should to be fulfilled in order to reach self-actualization. My students are wonderful and strive to meet their highest potential, but they also come to school with individual challenges. Some students might not have a water bottle or support doing their homework. Others are upset about something that happened throughout the day and don’t know how to cope. Each student is dealing with their own adversities.

This project, “Active and Calm,” deals with two opposing issues that lend themselves to each other.

One issue that students deal with is how do students relieve their stress and build relationships with their peers? Providing students with sports equipment during recess, PE, and brain breaks will allow students to learn physical education skills and social skills while having fun.

The secondary issue is that many students don’t know how to deal with their emotions. Creating a Calming Corner using manipulatjves such as pushits, stretchy guy, fidgets, and stress toys, will help students safely take a break, grasp how they’re feeling, express their emotions, and complete their learning upon their return. This project will help me to support students with active and calming needs.
