My Students

My students love the magic in learning. I am the Arts Coordinator/Coach at a District 75 school in Brooklyn. We have students in 6:1:1, 8:1:1, and 12:1:1 classroom settings across 5 school sites throughout Brooklyn. Our students are diagnosed with Autism, Speech or Language Impairment, Down Syndrome, and multiple disabilities. Additionally, they have diverse communication needs where some students require the use of a device to communicate. There are students who use echolalia which means they repeat phrases heard and have difficulty expressing their own thoughts. Some of my students have minimal verbal skills where they only babble, some speak in 2-3 word sentences, and some speak in full sentences.

Our students are always motivated to learn when lessons and activities are engaging, applicable in real life, and hands-on.

They especially love read alouds, art activities, and are so happy to participate and help their friends problem solve. To maintain their engagement and facilitate an understanding of learning concepts, they require visuals, clear and bright appealing pictures, hands-on activities, games, costumes, and big picture books, and items to meet their sensory needs.

My Project

At the end of May, our school will be putting on a musical of Aladdin Jr. We received this opportunity through a Broadway Jr. grant which allows us to put on a production with 60 of our students ranging from 3rd to 8th grade. We have rehearsals at school every Tuesday and Wednesday for an hour and half. The students are so excited during rehearsals to perform on stage. Participating in a musical truly allows them to express themselves and showcase their talents. Due to being home for extended periods of time due to the pandemic, this musical is a great outlet for our students to showcase their creativity and express themselves. They are dancing, singing, speaking, and even trying their best to memorize their lines. They are taking on the role as performers.

Donating to our project would be truly beneficial in helping us showcase our amazing students talents and abilities in our musical.

Your support would allow us to have very important costumes to bring the characters to life such as Aladdin, Jafar, and the guards. Your funding will also help us receive materials that we can use to create more costumes for our show. Our students are so excited to dress in their roles and always ask me during rehearsals if they are going to dress up. Your support would go a long way in making this come true.
