Help Ms. Hooper

It takes a village to polish a gem--please help these aspiring scholars. This class is an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) class in a large, diverse urban high school.

My students will be first generation college students--the first in their families to go to college. Many of them of come from underrepresented demographic groups, low income families, and some are immigrants. Yet, these students are taking advance courses (Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate), are hard working students, and do now believe that they can achieve their dreams to become an anesthesiologist, a pediatrician, an elementary teacher, a biologist and a variety of other professions and careers they are interested in. As juniors, they are now preparing for their ACT college entrance exams. They do not have the money to attend the high priced prep classes at Kaplan, Sylvan or other centers, but are motivated to prepare themselves to do well.

I am asking for two resources to help the students prepare for their ACT exams. First, I would like to purchase for each student a individual membership to the official ACT Prep. This is a portable resource that students could use in school, at the local library, at home (if they have a computer and Internet access, of which only half do) or anywhere else they can access the Internet. Secondly, I wish to purchase a ACT prep book for each student so all of them, even the ones without home access to the Internet can effectively study and prepare for the ACT.
