My Project

My students are studying the rise of West African empires like Mali and the heritage of Islam as an influential empire that spread across North Africa through trade caravans.

My students are merchants on a camel caravan through the Sahara desert.

They envision the deep geologic history of Africa and understand the reasons for the riches of gold and salt that brought the Mali empire to power. Through role play and research, the students are immersed in the challenges of physical and economic survival.

Students will be researching the history of the Muslim world and the West African empires. The camel models serve as a hands-on component that students really connect with.
