We all had childhood dreams. Perhaps we've even achieved some of them. Most of us, however, have probably forgotten them or feel it's too late. It's not too late for my students. In fact, it's the perfect time to ensure they achieve them.
At my school, advisory is more than housekeeping and attendance taking.
It is a place to build a community and to create student citizens. Advisories stay with their adviser all four years, building a literal family. My advisory this year is one of six freshman advisories. They are entering a project-based school that is both rigorous and caring. I am just getting to know them, but they are full of the same energy, excitement, curiosity, and trepidation that we all remember at that time in our lives.
My Project
As a teacher, I always try to not only impart the knowledge of my subjects, but also the knowledge I've gained from my life experiences. How many people wish they could go back and tell their past selves what they now know? Randy Pausch's book, The Last Lecture, offers a great perspective on life, with valuable lessons that can inform and influence us all. His book contains the story of his life, how he achieved his childhood dreams, and how everyone can work to achieve theirs.
Students will gain an idea of what is truly important and how to make the most of their personal and professional careers.
At this early of an age, this has an opportunity to make the biggest impact.
