My Students

It can get "lit" in this 12th grade Literature class. Whether we're debating the strength of Antigone's argument with her king-uncle or how things fell apart for the tragic hero Okonkwo, the energy is high. This is a literature class designed to challenge students preparing for college.

My students are funny, vivacious and sharp.

They come from across the globe including the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Europe. Our school is a college preparatory institution located in West Harlem and includes grade 6-12. From the moment students enter they are challenged to think, read and write in preparation for college.

My Project

After an exciting year of reading a plethora of authors from Bronte, Ellison, Achebe, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Wilson, Hansberry, Cisneros, Neruda and Wilde, we are beginning the second phase of our amazing class. My 12th grade students are preparing for their Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition exam in May and are in need of review books. After doing some research by buying a copy for myself and talking to a few other AP Literature teachers, this review book stands out in its clear-cut, simple ad comprehensive approach to the test. It includes strong strategies that my students will appreciate and full review of terms appropriate for the essays. Since, its best to have students own the book to work both in and outside of class, tutorials and over any vacations, I am requesting 25 books, one per student.

Our school has had great success in sending students to college and this project seeks to maintain that tradition of not just getting students in but helping them succeed while there.

A score of 3 or more on the AP exam could mean college credit for my students and more than just the financial boost that will be is the confidence they will have walking into college having been successful in a college course and on the exam.
