Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach a wonderful group of sixth-grade students in a high needs school in Charlotte, North Carolina. About 60 percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many students do not come prepared for class and it is very disheartening to me.

My students come in eager to learn with the materials that we have provided for them.

The teachers at our school go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure every child's need is met. The teachers want students to be successful and ready to learn every day.

My Project

During this difficult time during Covid, many students are constantly coming to class on a daily basis without any pencils or notebooks. Since the beginning of school, I have provided them with the resources however, due to the number of students coming without any materials I no longer have any for them to use. I typically hand out about 20 pencils in total per day and I may receive back about 10 each day.

The classroom is in need of an electric sharpener as the students have unfortunately broken two of them already.

I prefer to have electric sharpeners for them to use than manual sharpeners as they tend to make more of a mess in the classroom.
