Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal! I work at an elementary school on the South Side of Chicago teaching second grade. Most of my students have never used a computer before. Unfortunately, the test our school takes three times a year is on the computer and they must take it independently...that's right, with no help! This test affects their chance to promote to the next grade and it gives me information on what to teach. The problem is that my students lack basic computer skills. For instance, to read the passage, they must "scroll down" (which they have no idea how to do); they must click the correct answer using a mouse (they cannot go back if they click the wrong one), etc. I want my students to do well. They are working very hard, but if they can't operate the computer, they can't show what they have learned. In addition, many children their age already possess more computer skills than their parents. My students need to develop a familiarity with computers that will allow them to be competitive when they go out into the work force. This is no longer an extraneous skill- it is a prerequisite for most jobs. Despite being from a very low income area, my students deserve to have access to technology that will allow them to succeed later in life. Finally, many of my students are behind their peers nationwide in reading and math. As we work towards bridging that gap, the abundance of computer programs and websites aimed at remediating those skills would be immensely helpful. Please help my students succeed now and later in life by giving them much needed access to technology. My classroom full of future IT Specialists will be forever grateful, and so will I! My proposal is for two laptop computers with external mouses.
