My Students

My students are intelligent and hopeful. The majority of them live in community housing.

This housing area is poverty-stricken and thus not always the safest place.

Yet these families are resilient. Many come to us from single-parent homes, foster homes as well as homeless shelters. Some of our students live with a grandparent and many have a parent who has been or currently is incarcerated. Focusing on a child's social-emotional well-being is important. However, since the Covid-19 pandemic, it is even more so vital as children across our communities struggle to re-integrate back into the school mindset; struggling to balance their feelings and academics.

In spite of this adversity and hardship, our student body is amazing. They come to school prepared and ready to learn each day. Always very excited to be with their friends and teachers, learning how to socialize appropriately with peers, and excited to learn and grow in positive ways. They attend after school, play sports and are involved in various community centers.

Our population is mostly African American with a small percentage of Hispanic students. Around 97% of our students participate in the free lunch program. Our students strive for excellence and many achieve just that.

My Project

The items on this list will help support students overall functioning in school and help them to reach their highest potential. Students need to feel heard, understood and taught the necessary skills to be all they can be.

Students with healthy patterns, good use of self-control and interpersonal skills are known to perform better in school.

There is an increased need post-pandemic for mental health support through evidenced-based social-emotional learning. Focusing on mindfulness strategies and other emotional tools can support students to decrease their anxieties and prepare for learning. Students feeling supported and bringing awareness to this modality is the way to go!

I have seen firsthand how children, when given the chance and appropriate tools, can feel successful. If we set the tone, give examples, make learning fun and accessible, and offer support, success can be achieved. Many of these items will help the children feel safe in times when they are feeling stressed as well as calm their frayed nerves. There are many different adversities these children tackle daily due to being unclear of socially acceptable norms. One on one or in a small group, students should feel free to express themselves in a non-overstimulated environment; dim lighting with the help of a small lamp could help them when doing mindfulness activities. I'd like to teach my students how they can use those same strategies learned in individual and group counseling, in the classrooms. The therapy card games and mindfulness activities will support the students to create healthier choices and teach them to problem-solve through role-plays in an effort to change their mindsets.
