My Project

This project will enable elementary students with dyslexia and other basic reading disorders to access grade-level material independently as well as practice the skills they are learning in their structured literacy lessons.

Many of our students are identified as being dyslexic.

We have seen this affect their self-esteem as they have difficulty reading basic directions, completing on-line research, reading assignments across the curriculum, and completing independent work by themselves, and even at the 6th grade level must rely on adult support. This causes students to feel different from their peers, and often makes them feel that they are not capable, when in fact they are very capable! The C-Pen 2 will allow us to have materials available that students can use to complete the tasks above independently, thus helping them to feel they are on par with their peers, and feel better about the work they are able to do indpenendently. They will also be able to access their respective grade-level curriculums, allowing them to increase their vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension skills.

Additionally, all of our students receive either individual or small group structured literacy instruction. The decodable readers will give them additional opportunities to practice the skills they have learned using attractive books.
