Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

All our students have special needs, ranging from diagnoses of autism, intellectual disabilities, and severe emotional needs. Three quarters of our student population comes from low-income households and most qualify for free school lunch. Our student population is very mixed, and within a diagnosis so are their abilities and needs. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.

In working with our special needs students I realized how guidance was missing when it came to addressing topics related to puberty, sexuality, and relationships.

We work so much on independence skills, but these skills are often neglected, even though they are crucial to our students’ development as well as in them having fulfilling lives too. I was told that this information is taught at the high school level, but, I felt that starting to teach these skills at the high school level is too late for our students and that this information should be taught earlier.

So I took things into my own hands. I first started teaching my students who menstruate how to change their pads (by practicing putting on and taking off pads in prop underwear) so that they could be independent in the management of their periods. Then word got around that I started doing this, and parents started asking for me to give sexuality talks. In the past 6 years, I have given several parent trainings related to puberty and sexuality. I would love to continue learning more about this topic to better help our students, as well as their parents, navigate this life stage. This training would give me the tools to learn more about this topic formally.
