My Project

This request is for one iPad to provide speech-to-text/captioning services in a student-based test program within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Services department. A select number of students in this department suffer from profound hearing loss and cannot access the speech sounds necessary to understand instructional information. These students spend enormous amounts of time and energy speech reading, mentally filling in the blanks of what they can't understand (sometimes as much as of eighty percent of what is said), while attempting to keep up with their work and maintain pace with their hearing peers. Students who qualify for this program have persevered to maintain reading levels on par with their peers, but as they progress, they struggle to keep up with in-class lectures and student discussions as topics become increasingly complex.

The world has been opened for these students through access to speech-to-text/captioning programs, but I need your help to maintain this.

Incredible success has been found using the speech-to-text/captioning application, Ava.me; however, this program is most optimal on iPads which many schools do not provide. With an iPad, a profoundly deaf student would be able to travel through their school with access to immediate speech-to-text/captions so they can participate in discussions at the same level as their peers.

Imagine, for example, trying to navigate middle school, the academic and social struggles, all while understanding less than forty percent of what is said around you. This is the daily experience of a student in the mainstream education with profound hearing loss. With an iPad and an Ava.me subscription, the world of spoken language will be opened for these students, changing their lives forever.
