In the world today, students have so much information at their fingertips. It is essential to teach them to evaluate and synthesize what they read. I enjoy helping students discover their own identities through the books we read and how they write.
I try to do all I can to encourage and motivate my students to become life-long learners.
My Project
Reading at home is one of the primary struggles facing my students. In both my Reading and Language Arts classes, my students participate in Literature Circles where they read a book of their choice in small groups. I encourage students to choose a book that interests them over a book that is strictly on their reading level. As a result, some students struggle to keep up with reading at the same pace as other members of their group.
Access to an MP3 player loaded with the audio of a variety of books will help more students to stay engaged with their groups and complete their books.
One of the primary goals of Literature Circles is to give students a positive experience reading independently. The more success they have with their assigned book, the more likely they are to want to repeat that experience with another book.
These small MP3 players do not require an internet connection. Students can check out these devices to use at home for the duration of Lit Circles.
