My Students

Imagine a classroom with several mismatched computers, none able to access current learning websites and applications due to being out of date. This is my classroom now, with one of the computers being over 13 years old!

My students are children with autism in grades 2 - 6.

We are located in a large urban city in California in a neighborhood with high poverty. Many of the children do not have access to computers at home and their only chance to use it is at school. My school has been hard hit by the budget cuts and has not been able to update the computers for the classrooms in over 8 years. So our computers are no longer able to update and run any of the modern programs.

My Project

With these computers, my students will be able to access learning websites that are part of their curriculum, practice reading and math online, use online programs to help them write and spell better, and learn how to do research. This will help my students be a part of the modern world because they will have the access that other children in more affluent areas have.

Children with autism have a difficult time focusing in school and listening to teachers teach in a traditional lecture method.

However, give them an opportunity to learn using technology and their focus is laser-like! They can focus for hours and their learning opportunities are multiplied. With these computers, I will be able to find multiple engaging activities for the children and help them reach their learning potential (and have fun while doing it!)
