My Students

I teach Computer Science (CS) in Queens, New York. Our school is a special place with a rich composition of children from diverse backgrounds, particularly serving a large population of English Language Learners and students with disabilities. Many of our students come from families that face financial hardships that limit accessibility to technology. We are actively working to close the Digital Divide through CS instruction and work with donors will help ensure equitable access to technology tools for all of our students.

All children should be exposed to rich STEM + Computer Science learning opportunities.

My Project

It is important that all of my students feel welcome and included in our classroom. With a large group of English Language Learners that often means finding innovative solutions that help keep them engaged in instruction while they are acquiring English, assist in their communication with the group, and allow for meaningful access to content alongside their peers.

It's 2018 and we have incredible technological advances that allow for simultaneous translations into multiple languages during lessons or student presentations!

I was very fortunate to attend a Microsoft Innovator Educator Workshop where I've learned to leverage translation tools to implement these advances but I require the some additional technology to put them into place.

This project would give our class access to a PC laptop running Windows 10 with Microsoft Presentation Translator enabled and a bluetooth microphone. This would my students with real time translation into multiple languages simultaneously during shared Powerpoint lessons or presentations through our classroom digital display board. Using tablets in the audience, students can select their home language and follow along. Additionally, students might choose to present to the class in their home language and have the ability to translate to English through real time captioning.

I have found that my students acquire English quickly and using these tools inspires confidence/risk taking conversing with peers in English around the shared content delivered. These tools are not meant to replace immersive language acquisition but will be used alongside that method.
