My Students

I teach first grade in a small farming town in Illinois. We have such a diverse student population. On one side of town, we have students who come from half-million-dollar homes and on the other side of town, students come from public-housing situations. 30% of our student population receives free and reduced-price lunch and school fees. My goal for all my students is to give each and every one of them the same opportunity to learn with every advantage possible.

If I can accomplish one thing in the short time I have my students, it would be that know that I truly love and value them as individuals.

My Project

As I teacher, I have an obligation to provide my students with experiences and exposure to all cultures. Teaching acceptance and understanding starts NOW with us. It is now more important than ever to teach acceptance, understanding, and promote unity.

Literature can open worlds and provide opportunities for exposure to cultures and ethnicities that my students would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.

I have selected a wide range of books that promote acceptance and understanding. These books will spark natural conversations that will allow me to teach my students about other cultures. When we understand others, we can start to build unity!
