Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach deaf and hard-of-hearing students, students with learning disabilities, and English Language Learners in a high-poverty, Title I school. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch everyday. They face many challenges in their lives, including learning the basics of reading, writing, and math.

My students have a lot to overcome, but they are rising to the challenge.

Once my students realize they can learn, their learning takes off and the possibilities are endless! As a teacher it is so rewarding to see students who once thought they can't, now realize they can, and it is my joy to guide them towards that realization.

My Project

These books will instill a love for reading in my students who are beginning readers. When you struggle with reading, it is easy to become discouraged. But when you see yourself succeeding, your confidence grows.

If you want to get better at something, you need to practice, and you need to practice a lot.

It is my goal to have students read at least 30 minutes a day. In order to make that happen, I need to have the books available. My beginning readers typically read 5 books in that 30 minute block. That adds up to nearly 1,000 books over the course of the school year!

All of these books are below a 2.0 reading level, and most of them are below a 1.2 reading level. All of these books have AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes that go along with them, which help my students visually see their success. By keeping my classroom library stocked with new and interesting AR books-- at a level my students can read-- they truly become readers!
