Hello. I am a new teacher at Burbank Middle School in Highland Park in Los Angeles. I will be teaching seventh and eighth grade intervention reading. The students I teach are at least two grade levels behind in reading skills. LAUSD has an excellent intervention program in place. In addition, Burbank Middle School allows students to do in-class reading each day during English periods. From my observation, the students are more likely to read if books at their reading level are available in the classroom. The Accelerated Reading program is an excellent one and we are very fortunate that we are alloted class time to have the students read. I would like to assemble a classroom library to which the students to have access. With an accessible library the students will increase the number of books they read per term and increase their reading levels at a faster rate. There is a system in place whereby students take a test on computer for each book they read and receive reading points. The classroom library will work in tandem with this system. Such a library will impact every single student in the classroom. My goal is to help these students improve their reading skills and foster a love for reading. With your donation, this is a goal which is entirely achievable. Thank you.
