My Students

The scholars in my special education class are currently struggling with a variety of disabilities- learning, autism, dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, intellectual, and/ or social-emotional challenges. They range from grades 3 to 5 and their functional academic levels are from grades pre-K to fourth. As their teacher, the challenge is always keeping them engaged throughout the lesson regardless of their varying abilities and functional levels. The one thing that​ keeps them all motivated and enthusiastic about learning is the opportunity to use technology.

My Project

As part of an effort to make students independent learners, they work in small differentiated groups on a daily basis. With an iPad, students will be able to access definitions and pronunciation of unfamiliar words, struggling writers can record an audio of their work, ENL (English as a New Language) students can quickly lookup images to support their understanding of text, struggling readers can access audiobooks, they can even record their reading and assess reading fluency, and so on. Students will be able to use the IPad in their groups. Most importantly this can be done by students without teacher support thus promoting independent life long learners.
