My Students

My students are hardworking, ambitious, and determined to complete school and attend college. Along with their rigorous school schedules, many of them work full-time jobs to care for themselves, their families, and their children.

Aside from the domestic hardships nearly all of them face, they maintain their academic focus.

This year more than half of my seniors are admitted and enrolled in a community college for the fall semester. Many of them were high school credit deficient when they began at this site and through use of their grittiness, self-determination, and self-promotion skills many of them are now the first in their family to attend college.

My Project

My students recently took a school climate survey and reported being hungry throughout different times of the school day.

The students reported that they would be more motivated to attend school if snacks were provided - there is a noticeable increase in their productivity on days when snacks are provided.

School breakfast and lunch were reported as not being substantial enough to hold them over for an entire school day.

Additionally, students shared that snacks would help them focus more closely on their work. Many of them explained that they work late nights and either do not have adequate food at home or they do not have enough food at home to pack snacks. One student reported that it is hard to concentrate when her "stomach is talking!" Another shared that her "back and head ached" and that she is "too grouchy to concentrate" when she's hungry.

I have been providing snacks as often as I can to help my students make it through the day, but unfortunately, it is not enough for all students.
