Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher who is serving children in a Resource setting. I pull out children who are identified as learning disabled. Most of my children are still learning in a general education classroom setting. My services are their support to help them keep up with the rest of their peers. Most of my students come to me with little hope of academic success. They have tried to keep up with their peers and have failed. Failure is a very familiar feeling in their lives. Some of my children come with behavior difficulties, some don't, but exhibit some depression symptoms like staying quiet during the lesson, not wanting to share life experiences. All of my students come from families that struggle on a daily basis to provide for their children, having two or three jobs. I have students who have never been outside of their neighborhood. I believe that it is my job, to build my students toward success by making them believe in themselves. I build upon their strengths, not their weaknesses. I show them that there is a talent in each and every one of them. I group my children by ability, not by age or grade level. I then, assess them to see what their strengths and weaknesses are. From there, I form a plan for each group that will help those particular children succeed academically. I have about five to seven students in each group. I see about twenty five children every day. I have had kids come to me hopeless, and after a month or so everyone saw a great difference in their academic achievements. I try to give it my all. In order for my instruction to be successful I need to create an inviting atmosphere. Where kids feel comfortable and eager to participate and learn. I found some great resources that would help me create that environment. Many of my students have difficulty focusing when there is too much going on in the classroom. During periodical assessment I need my children to focus on their on work. I found some great privacy partitions to help me do so. These partitions will also help me assess my children more accurately. My classroom is very small and my children like to look over to see what their neighbors are writing. By providing the partitions, my students will be able to become independent thinkers. Another great resource that will help is the word windows. I have some children who see the writing in a book as a whole big word. I need them to focus on one word at a time. These word windows will help them do so. We do reading every single day before the writing activities. When we have writing activities, many of my students have difficulty remembering to leave spaces between their words. The word spacers will help my children become independent writers. I use with many of my students the dry erase boards. They simply love it!!! I recently ran out of the dry erase markers and would love to continue using these boards. I always have students who want to be my helpers. I saw a great tabletop paper and writing centers that invite the students to help themselves to materials they need to be creative and complete their writing enjoyably. The centers are very attractive to the eye and are great motivation for my students to do their work. I will use these centers every single day. Another great resource will be the write and wipe answer boards. These boards will serve many purposes. They will help me assess how my students are progressing academically. Another purpose will be to make learning fun while building social skills of interaction between peers. I will ask a question and the students will write their answers and show me right away without calling out. This will also help many of my students practice self control by thinking twice before writing their answers. I know that these wonderful materials will help me reach my special students. Thank you for taking your time to read my proposal. I hope you will find it meaningful and worthy of your time and effort.
