This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give us a fighting chance! For the first time in years we have put together a competitive Academic Decathlon team. (We have not had a team for years!) We finally have committed students! Now all we need are the tools to helps us fine tune our skills.

Our students are from some the poorest families in Northern California.

We currently have over twenty-five percent unemployment in our community and we are desperately trying to hold together our Academic Decathlon Team. Money is tight and we just don't have the kind of money it would take to buy the things we need to compete against the larger, well off schools that we will be trying to beat.

My Project

Our best students struggle to afford tuition after high school and it is their hope that by successfully competing as a member of an Academic Decathlon team they might win scholarships to major state universities or perhaps, be able to give themselves a leg up. Most people fear public speaking more than death! High school students are no different! If we had a video camera we could use it to critic ourselves as we prepare for the speech portion of the competition and, hopefully, put the student’s fears at ease.

Not only will this camera help this year's team but it will continue to provide a much need resources for a long time to come.

It is our hope, through the success of the team, we will be able to create a self perpetuating team of decathletes and provide inspiration for the whole student body!
